ALBANY -- Doctors are not yet ready to recommend cholesterol-lowering drugs for healthy people, despite praise for a study that showed the statin Crestor reduced the risk of heart disease in people with normal levels of cholesterol.
Statins are a class of drugs typically prescribed to people with high cholesterol, a risk factor for cardiac disease. The study, which was paid for by Crestor manufacturer AztraZeneca Plc., found that treating people with normal cholesterol lowered the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The study was released Sunday at a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.
