WORRY OVER INTERNET PAEDOPHILES

A SPECIAL Birmingham police team has voiced concern about thenumber of child pornography perverts using the Internet.

It follows figures which show that West Midlands Police identified24 paedophiles dealing in child pornography on the Internet in thepast year.

Just over half of those identified have been charged, convictedand received sentences ranging from probation to two years'imprisonment.

The remainder were cautioned for attempting to obtain childpornography.

The Unit - one of only a few of its kind in the UK - has passed ondetails of the men to police across the country.

Detective Sergeant Peter Uglow, of West Midlands Police ten-strongPaedophile and Pornography Unit, said the shady world of child pornis considerably larger than even he previously expected.

And with the use of advanced information technology, it is growingat a disturbing rate, he says.

Readily available

He added: "The biggest current concern to us is the amount ofchild pornography being distributed on the Internet.

"The problem with the Internet is that child porn can be easilycopied and is readily available in the comfort of people's homes.And an investigation into a single individual can often uncover alarge number of other offences.

"However, we are constantly looking at ways of keeping up withadvances in technology."

As well as Internet-related offences, the Unit also investigatespaedophile activity and monitors known sex offenders.

And in the past six months, the Unit, based at Digbeth policestation, made 19 separate seizures of child porn, mostly photographsand videos.
